There was a special report on the BBC last night about how China’s hunger to fuel growth at home requires it to source large amounts of raw materials, this time a Chinese mining company, Chinalco, has bought Mount Toromocho for US$3bn cash. Standing at 15,000 feet (4,600m), and containing two billion tonnes of copper ore this mountain will eventually dissapear. The ore will be mined and processed to electrify the whole of China.
Will countries like Peru face the same fate that Rahim alludes to? Will it become an empty husk? I share his concerns.
